It’s 2019 and I’m officially back in NYC after being with family overseas for a bit. While I was away I had some time to think about how I want to move forward with my tech career. The two main thoughts that came to mind were: I want to be more intentional and I (as always) want to grow as a developer.
Being more intentional for me means understanding the ‘why’ behind my actions. If I want to give a talk, why do I want to give that talk? Will it benefit me or others? Will it be an exciting or learning experience? Am I doing it, because that’s what I see other developers doing it? (if so, I probably shouldn’t being doing it) Whatever action I take I want to make sure it’s either:
Improving my skills
A fun, exciting and/or learning experience
So, my tech goals for 2019 are listed below, along with the reasons I want to complete them. I’m hoping that posting them on my website (and printing it and putting it on my wall) will hold me accountable.
Update my favorite project Book Lover (aka Livre Lover, because Book Lover was taken in the App Store at the time). This involves:
Updating the way I parse data using Codable
Clean up the QR scan code
Possibly add or replace the Goodreads API with Google Books API
Improve design - I’m not sure where to begin for this one, but it should be fun!
This falls under the B and C category. I honestly just love this app, because it solved a problem that I encountered when going to a bookstore. I would always google a book that I was interested in, go to the Goodreads website to get a general gist of what people thought of the book. If I wasn’t feeling rushed I’d search for a New York Times review. Hence, why this app uses both APIs. I haven’t updated this in over a year and it’s currently crashing after the scan, so I thought it’d be a good time to get back to this.
Volunteer more. I volunteered twice last year. I usually volunteer for tech events that help girls learn how to code. It’s a bit trite, but children truly are the future and that’s why enough for me.
Speak at one meetup this year. I’m an introvert, who doesn’t exactly enjoy speaking in front of a group of people. For this goal I just want to push myself, give it a try and see if it’s really as bad as I think it is. Who knows, maybe I’ll love it and continue. Maybe not. This could just be a goal to stretch me, a learning experience.
Finish CS50 this year. I’ve started and stopped Harvard’s (free) course on computer science multiple times. It’s quite delightful and engaging. I’m halfway through at this point and I’m going to wrap it up by the end of this year.
After updating Book Lover start a new project. I’m thinking an app the provides all the black owned businesses in Brooklyn. This will force me to learn new technologies, challenge myself, create something I believe is needed and just have fun.
Bonus: attend 2 hackathons. Why? I love them. You win prizes and learn new things. What can I say, I’m a simple girl.
